Microstructural and interface properties of aluminium alloy coatings on alumina applied by friction surfacing

Two large groups of materials, namely metals and ceramics, are used in mass quantities today’s industry because their outstanding properties. To achieve higher product performance dissimilar materials need to be combined assemblies, but joining is challenging. Using friction surfacing technology Al[Formula: see text]O[Formula: text] ceramic substrates were coated with an aluminium alloy (AlMg4.5Mn0.7). Earlier research by the authors suggested that two major bonding mechanisms, mechanical interlocking van der Waals forces, responsible for strengths achieved between coating substrate. Further scanning electron microscopy, transmission high-resolution microscopy energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis at a sub nanometre resolution conducted presented this article. These analytical methods revealed grains form sharp boundary without evidence either chemical reaction or diffusion interface suggest main mechanisms Al/Al[Formula: system forces.
